In my quest for a more challenging hike, I decided to tackle the scenic yet demanding 관악산 연주대 trail, starting from 관악산역 exit 1 and ending at 낙성대역. With vibrant autumn colors, unique rock formations, and a rewarding sunset awaiting at the summit, this hike delivered on both beauty and the thrill of progression.

Overall, the trail conditions were good, but it’s definitely a route that requires a bit of extra attention. The trail generally takes about five hours if you know where you're going—or closer to six hours if you’re like me. There isn’t a lot of signage along the way, which made it tricky at times to figure out the correct path. Fallen leaves added to the challenge, hiding parts of the trail and making it easy to stray off course.

The terrain is pretty rocky, with some sections that involve a bit of scrambling. It’s manageable, but if you’re not comfortable with rocky paths, consider bringing trekking poles for stability. Also, if you’re hiking close to sunset or planning a long day, a headlamp is a good idea. Some sections require you to use your hands, and the extra light can make a huge difference.

In terms of supplies, I kept it simple: 500ml of Gatorade, a protein bar, and a few pitted dates, which kept me fueled for the six-hour trek. The hike is challenging but rewarding, so pack what you need without overloading yourself. There are also lots of cats near the temple, so some people pack treats for the cats!

My favorite part of the trail was the sense of escape that hit me during the sunset as I perched on a huge rock, gazing out over the city. The sky turned a beautiful pink that pierced through the blue of the coming night, creating a stunning backdrop. Sitting there alone, it was like I’d found my own escape from the stress of daily life and the city's endless crowds.

This hike up 관악산 turned out to be exactly what I was looking for—a beautiful challenge with just the right mix of effort and reward. The trail’s unique blend of temples, rock formations, and vibrant autumn colors kept things interesting all the way to the top.

If you’re looking for a hike that lets you escape the stress of daily life and soak in some amazing views, this one is worth it. It’s a perfect choice for anyone ready to step up to a bit more demanding trail, and despite a few navigational challenges, the journey is more than worth it.
